The system addresses the challenge of providing change efficiently, introducing a refresh protocol for divisible transactions with logarithmic transaction costs. Taler’s design emphasizes anonymity for customers while maintaining transparency for merchants. The paper presents key Taler concepts, fundamental protocols, correctness arguments, and a freely available reference implementation. Comparative analysis with blockchain-based systems highlights Taler’s cost-effectiveness and potential for stronger anonymity in ordinary transactions.
