This research has evaluated the issue of peri-urbanization impact on the phenomenon of the urban heat island (UHI) and thermal stress on the urban setting of Jorhat and Nagaon in India. The experiment incorporated the urban heat island and sprawl trend through UHI index and Urban Sprawl Index (USI) using satellite data between 2007 and 2021. Further, Thermo-hygrometric index (THI) and Net effect temperature (NET) were used in assessing thermal discomfort. The study revealed that both cities experienced significant urban sprawl with USI values as follows: Jorhat (0.22), Nagaon (0.12) between 2007 and 2021. The peri-urban expansion is causing rise of mean LST by 0.51 °C and 1.7 °C for January and 2.75 °C and 3.84 °C in April for Jorhat and Nagaon city during the period 2007 to 2021, respectively. There was an increase in “strong” or “very strong” UHI zones in both cities, most notably during April. In addition, the increase in urban expansion causing uncomfortable days due to heat stress, and on the other hand reducing the occurrences of days with thermal comfort in both cities. Thus outward growth of urban areas through peri-urban development increasing UHI impacts besides causing thermal discomfort within Jorhat and Nagaon city region.
