Sustainable Transit-Oriented Development: A Framework for Enhancing Urban Livability Through Integrated Urban Design Principles

In wake of the recent rapid urbanization in Mumbai city in the last few decades, the city is facing challenges of superimposition of new development models on an existing organic layer of life, intense traffic congestion, public transport expansion and environmental degradation. In lieu of the metro line now functional and expanding in a successful manner, the next most plausible aspect is the introduction of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) schemes in the areas around the metro line. Before such a strategy is introduced it would be beneficial to get an overview of the ways of making the resultant TOD development sustainable in the given urban context. The principles of sustainable urban development bring forth a few vital parameters that have to be addressed while setting out for achieving the same. This research paper aims to understand the scope of optimization of the principles for sustainable urban development to come forth with a design framework that could be adopted for TOD projects and those which would offer a better quotient of sustainable urban development in the given context. In this regard this research paper evaluates the dynamics for large scale Urban projects such as a TOD model in the context of Chembur Naka Metro Station, along the 2A yellow Line, M-East Ward, Chembur, Mumbai city, Maharashtra state, India.
