Piezoelectric Tiles as an Alternative Renewable Energy Source for Sustainable Development in Urban Context

Renewable energy (RE) sources are the answer to all the energy issues of present and future, but it comes with a hefty cost and there is a need to delve into another alternative RE source. This research paper evaluates the potential of piezoelectric tile’s technology as an alternative energy source in an urban context. Currently available piezoelectric tiles worldwide were evaluated to identify the suitability of piezoelectric tiles for an alternative energy source. A Railway station in Mumbai’s metropolitan region was investigated, with an estimated 313,783 daily passengers. The study considered the highest passenger density class and energy consumption of the electrical fixtures of the current station’s platforms when choosing the quantity and type of piezoelectric tiles. The study looked at the tile’s energy generation, initial capital investment, the life cycle of the tile, and the projected savings after installing the selected tile type. Findings indicated that 4 slabs of 2 tiles each are needed to meet the energy requirement of all platforms using Pavegen floor tiles. The outcome demonstrates that pedestrian flow can be utilised to transform kinetic energy into electrical by using piezoelectric tile slabs. This research is helpful for the urban planners, policymakers, and engineers looking to incorporate sustainable energy solutions in densely populated areas.
