Enhancing Community Cohesion Through Public Open Spaces for Social Sustainability: A Case of Lucknow, India
摘要
Sustainable design is now a significant focus for urban populations globally, covering economic, ecological, and social elements. There is frequently a tendency to prioritize social aspects over the physical environment within the field of social sciences. Nevertheless, it is crucial to recognize the intrinsic link between physical and social elements within the framework of sustainable development. Urban designers are placing greater emphasis on how physical design can impact community well-being in public open spaces. The study focus on the relationship between the community cohesion and public open spaces. Public open spaces encompass many areas, such as front yards, parks, streets, terraces etc. The significance of these spaces and their relationship with community well-being will be the focus of this research paper. Research paper firstly examines the relationship between community cohesion and sustainability by exploring pertinent theories and definitions. The study investigates how urban open spaces impact street dynamics and community well-being, categorizing them accordingly. It features a case study from Lucknow, India, which helps to establish a typology and evaluate people’s preferences for these outdoor areas. Ultimately, it delves into the importance of open spaces in facilitating interactions between people and urban environments. According to the study, front yards in historic city centres serve as semi-public spaces that are necessary for a range of activities. This highlights the significance of the physical design of these places in improving social interactions, promoting individual identity, and fortifying community cohesion. Researchers, planners, and urban designers will be able to create more significant urban designs with the help of these results.
