A conducive learning environment is the basic need of any school where the classroom is the primary unit. A healthy daylight environment of the classroom enhances the whole teaching-learning process. India has ample sunlight throughout the year, which presents excellent opportunities for a designer to design spaces that take advantage of this natural light. Natural light in a space can be enhanced by architectural configurations. This paper investigates the relationship between day lighting and architectural configuration for classrooms. A case study approach is taken to understand the live case scenario for classrooms in a school in Pune, India. The measurements of daylight lux levels in classrooms were taken using a calibrated digital lux meter. Building simulation using ECOTECT and RADIANCE software was done to assess retrofit measures to enhance the daylight levels and distribution. The study positively links the architectural configurations and daylight which has been successfully proved by retrofitting measures. For East side classrooms, vertical fins and light shelf were effective, for south side classrooms, reduction in window to wall ratio (WWR) with light shelves gave better results and for north side classroom, increase in WWR and reduction in shading devices proved effective.
