This chapter focuses on mental health care considerations for U.S. military veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,queer, or as another minoritized sexual orientation or gender identity (LGBTQ+). Concepts and skills necessary for effectively addressing interpersonal and systemic bias among LGBTQ+ veterans are reviewed such as relevant military history and culture, impact of minority- and military-related stressors on healthcare disparities, as well as progress in affirmative care and mental health treatment. Given the intersectionality of minority- and military-related stressors for LGBTQ+ veterans, ten recommendations for culturally responsive mental health treatment are provided and demonstrated in a case vignette.
