Providing affirming and culturally attuned care for LGBTQ+ clients requires professionals to navigate the constantly shifting socio-political landscape. Macro-level laws, policies, and even political discourse can have immediate and dramatic effects on the health, wellbeing, and safety of LGBTQ+ people directly, and indirectly through greater polarization, fractured social and family relationships, and increased rates of discrimination and victimization that can lead to or exacerbate worsened mental health outcomes. The contents of this book were relevant and timely prior to recent socio-political shifts and have now become critical. What we hope that readers will take away from this book is a greater appreciation for the types of stressors that disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ people, the unique strengths that they possess, and how they relate to case conceptualization and treatment. We hope that readers finish each chapter better equipped and more confident in their ability to provide LGBTQ+ affirming care. Last, we hope that this book will be a resource to you, the reader, and to institutions of higher education charged with training future generations of helping professionals.
