One of the main issue in the construction industry is the high cement usage since it produces an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. This leads to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Apart from this, another critical problem is waste management which accumulates day by day and leads to pollution. To overcome these issues different replacements such as industrial by-products and waste materials have been introduced. Papermill sludge also known as hypo sludge is an innovative material obtained from paper mills after treatments. In this study, concrete mixes were cast by partially replacing cement with paper sludge at 5, 10, 15 and 20% and were compared with normal concrete. Paper sludge used for the study was obtained as solid waste from the paper mill which was dried, ground, and sieved through 90 μm. This chapter focuses on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete with partial replacement of cement by paper sludge. The compressive strength exhibited a 24.55% enhancement at 10% paper sludge replacement relative to control mix and was considered optimum. The presence of SiO2 (12.8%), CaO (17.60%) & Al2O3 (8.16%) as observed from XRF analysis in paper sludge may have contributed to the strength enhancement of the concrete. The results indicated that paper sludge-incorporated concrete exhibited enhanced strength and durability compared to the control mix, which can be attributed to reduced porosity and refined microstructural composition.
