In 2020, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure promoted a massive assessment on structural tunnel, followed in 2022 by the issuance of a new, more structured and risk-based assessment standard which has enabled to plan a new concept to refurbishing works of the tunnels along the network. Autostrade per l’Italia, responding to this high demand for maintenance work, mainly related to a significant part of the network built before the 1970s, has developed a new approach to renovate the existing tunnel asset, named Tunnel Renewal Strategy (“TRS”). TRS is a comprehensive approach which aims to achieve service life’s renovation of existing tunnels through different re-lining solutions involving the demolition of a portion of the existing lining, the insertion of waterproofing and the construction of a new - thin high-performance structural shell. Over the last three years the design of the solutions has been developed and implemented through pilot projects. The construction industry was approached by engaging specialized players in the development of innovative solutions. Right now, about 40 tunnel projects have been designed for relining purpose and half of them are already completed (or on the way to be). In addition, over the last three years, many refurbishments and temporary measures have been carried out on the whole motorway network to improve safety and service levels for users.
