This study delves into the funeral practices of Basque fishermen and whalers who operated in the Northwestern Atlantic, with the colonial Caribbean serving as a contrasting model to enrich the analysis. It also traces the evolution over three centuries of the cemeteries in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence used by these seasonal workers and how they had to adapt their customs to new environments. The study offers death statistics of Basque fishermen for the first time, although at the moment not all available sources have been used. In the current state of research, much of the conclusions presented in this study are working hypotheses.
