The stories unpacked in this chapter demonstrate some of the challenges faced in the intensive care setting in terms of societal biases: issues that perhaps aren’t overtly covered in medical school training, but nonetheless emerge in the emotionally charged environment peculiar to the intensive care setting. Twelve quotations highlight some of the more difficult issues that the intensivist might face and need to address in the context of their professional, clinical roles and/or the care they provide. The reader is asked to consider their own perspectives and how they have or would confront similar issues in their own professional life. Attitudes to the judgement of others; gender inequity; and discrimination based upon age, religion, race and socioeconomic status are some of the topics discussed.
