This chapter talks about the challenges that come with a career working in the intensive care specialty: the expectations, the pitfalls, and the extent to which one may even question the career choice. Lack of training opportunities can escalate these feelings and be stressful for even the most accomplished intensivist, and aging gracefully within the field can be difficult. The idea of being successful in every aspect of your life as a mere mortal here on earth is discussed—is ‘having it all’ truly attainable in any real sense? Seeing the big picture and keeping your eyes focussed on the here and now as well as the horizon is important, with the path to a successful career lying together with the path to a meaningful life.
