Six countries on the shores of the Black Sea have conducted geological research in their sector of the Black Sea. Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Turkish, and Georgian scientists have studied gas manifestations in the course of their research and recorded an extensive list of gas seeps off their coasts. Our review of the gas manifestations in the Black Sea owes much to the results of our foreign colleagues. In particular, the results of gas-geochemical and geoacoustic areal studies of gas manifestations at the bottom of the northeastern Black Sea by Russian scientists are considered. In the Georgian sector, the largest number of gas seeps is confined to the shelf near the mouths of the rivers and, to a lesser extent, to the continental slope and its foot. The coastal waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea abound with seeps of natural gases. The highest concentration of seeps on the shelf of the Romanian sector was found in elongated depressions above the edges of filled channels. The results of studies of gas seeps at a number of test sites within the shelf and slope areas of the western and eastern parts of the Turkish sector are also presented.
