This chapter examines data management strategies for two contracts held by the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources with the International Seabed Authority (ISA). These contracts cover the exploration of polymetallic nodules (the MANGAN project) in the Pacific Ocean and seafloor massive sulfides (the INDEX project) in the Indian Ocean. The two projects use distinct data systems, reflecting differences in their timelines, deposit types, and objectives. Despite starting several years apart, both projects utilized Geographic Information System (GIS)-based platforms during the initial exploration phase to visualize and analyze deposit-related data. As nodule resource assessments in the flat abyssal plains are approaching completion, the MANGAN project has progressed to its second phase, focusing on environmental monitoring and impact assessment. During this phase, all data have been migrated to a Microsoft SQL Server database to efficiently manage local datasets, including time series. In contrast, the INDEX project, due to its later start and the geological complexity of three-dimensional sulfide deposits in rugged terrains, remains in its first exploration phase, still relying on GIS-based systems. This case study highlights the critical role of data management in mineral exploration, resource evaluation, environmental baseline analysis and monitoring, and regulatory compliance. Comprehensive databases, combined with standardized data and GIS projects, are crucial for streamlining workflows, carrying out complex data analyses, enhancing decision-making, and ensuring adherence to ISA standards. Both projects have implemented station and sample databases to digitize field records, facilitating efficient integration and automated reporting. Despite initial plans for a unified system, separate databases for MANGAN and INDEX will be maintained to accommodate their distinct requirements. The focus will instead shift to producing standardized output products such as thematic maps and reports. This chapter underscores the importance of establishing standardized data management plans from the outset to ensure consistent formats, efficient storage, and seamless integration across multidisciplinary exploration projects.
