Tribological coating is a special coating that applied to a surface of parts to improve the performance under friction, wear and lubrication. Tribological coatings act as a protective barrier, reducing friction between contracting surfaces, which in turn increase part life span, smoother operation, lower energy consumption in machinery and require less frequent replacement. There are different types of tribological coating that can applied in wide range of coating materials and each provide specific advantages. The examples of different coatings are metal coatings (Nickel, Chromium, etc.), Ceramic coatings, polymer coating, diamond like carbon coating, and nanomaterial coatings. The tribological coating is not only used in aerospace applications (landing gear, engine parts) but also used in automotive (engine parts, transmission, gear), manufacturing (tool and machine parts), medical devices (surgical instruments), and consumer goods (doorknobs, etc.). The diamond like carbon coatings, ceramic oxide coating, etc., are the examples of tribological coating in aerospace application. Overall, tribological coatings are a valuable technology in aerospace industry because it reduces friction, wear, maintenance need. Further it helps to improve aircraft performance, fuel efficiency, and operational cost. This chapter presents an overview of the various tribological coatings, advantages and disadvantages, nanomaterial tribological coatings for aerospace application. Finally, challenges and future direction were discussed.
