Transport-related Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) enhance urban mobility by providing advanced services that improve daily life and autonomy. However, older adults face significant barriers to adopting these technologies, such as cognitive decline, digital exclusion, and ageism. Given the potential of ICTs to improve mobility and quality of life, understanding the factors influencing older adults’ acceptance is critical for addressing these challenges and promoting inclusive urban mobility solutions. This study investigates these factors among older adults in Shanghai, China, through semi-structured interviews with 54 participants from three neighborhoods, which represent representing rapidly urbanized areas, relocation housing zones, and mixed residential outskirts. The findings identify five key themes influencing adoption: Technology Familiarity and Past Experience, Security Concerns and Gender-Specific Trust, Convenience and Subsidies, Environmental Awareness and Family Support and Personal Preferences. While familiarity with technology and trust shape willingness to adopt mobility technology, convenience and financial incentives are critical drivers of usage. The results show older adults recognize sustainability concerns, many prioritize personal comfort and efficiency over eco-friendly choices. Additionally, family support also plays a key role in adoption, but a gap exists between this reliance and older adults’ aspiration for greater independence. Ultimately, older adults’ acceptance of transport-related ICTs is driven more by their individual needs and experiences than by technological sophistication. Enhancing older adults’ adoption of ICT-related transportation technologies requires addressing trust and usability concerns through simplified interfaces and secure systems, fostering inclusion with family-oriented training and community support, and offering affordable, on-demand transport options tailored to their needs.
