A Systematic Review of XR, Spatial, and Physical Interaction in Remote Communication for Emotional Well-Being in Older Adults

This study explores how Extended Reality (XR), spatial interaction, and haptic systems enhance intimacy, spatial engagement, and overall emotional well-being among older adults in remote settings. As an increasing number of older individuals rely on technology to maintain connections with distant family and friends, traditional communication methods-such as video calls and text messaging-often fail to fully address their emotional and social needs, particularly in alleviating loneliness and fostering a sense of companionship. Following the PRISMA guidelines, this study systematically reviewed and categorized 89 studies that met the inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 939 articles. The findings indicate that XR and haptic systems hold significant potential in enhancing emotional expression, promoting social engagement, and facilitating cross-spatial interactions for older users. However, several challenges remain, including technological accessibility, user comfort, long-term applicability in home environments, cognitive differences across different age groups of older adults, and the potential emergence of the “uncanny valley” effect in immersive settings. Furthermore, this study underscores the importance of multimodal interaction-integrating visual, auditory, and haptic modalities-in better supporting the cognitive abilities and emotional needs of older adults. By providing an in-depth analysis of current opportunities, challenges, and future directions, this study offers new perspectives and recommendations for XR-based remote spatial and haptic interaction design. These insights not only contribute to the theoretical foundation for optimizing social connectedness and emotional well-being among older adults but also serve as a valuable guide for future research in this domain.
