Methodological Considerations for Studies with Older Adults Living with Dementia and Their Caregivers: Insights from a Dyadic Social Robot Study

The global population is aging rapidly, leading to an increased incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). This demographic shift underscores the urgent need for research that includes individuals living with ADRD and their caregivers. Despite their valuable perspectives, individuals with ADRD have historically been underrepresented in research due to concerns about cognitive impairments, recruitment challenges, and ethical considerations. Dyadic studies, which incorporate both caregivers and care recipients, offer a more holistic understanding of caregiving relationships but also introduce unique complexities. This paper examines key methodological considerations from a virtual interview study evaluating a social robot designed to support older adults with ADRD and their family caregivers. Participants were recruited through caregiver networks and organizations, with eligibility assessed via a pre-screening Zoom call to ensure cognitive and technological readiness. Study sessions featured pre-recorded videos demonstrating the robot’s features, interspersed with structured discussion prompts to maintain engagement and reduce cognitive fatigue. Findings highlight challenges in recruitment and retention, the importance of eligibility assessment and rapport-building, and the necessity of adaptability in study design to accommodate cognitive and emotional needs. These insights contribute to ongoing discussions in HCI on designing and conducting ethical, inclusive, and participant-centered research with aging and cognitively diverse populations.
