Nuhma Gunyah is the evolution of my cultural inquiry and the Indigenous research methodologies revealed through the creation of Gunyah—an experiential and visual artwork. The process of creating and decoding Gunyah allowed me to connect to aspects of myself and integrate my knowledge of place, Country, womanhood, community, and Indigeneity. The creation of Gunyah and the subsequent unfolding of Nuhma Gunyah explores my journey of asserting the value of artmaking as an Indigenous research method, and the importance of implementing unique experiential processes in Indigenous Knowledge research. Finding solace in the old ways of tactile exploration with Country, I created a physical and metaphorical gunyah in which I could unravel different facets of myself and contemplate where I fit within the current Australian paradigm. I examine how creating Gunyah became a methodological tool for exploring different ways of being and doing in the academy. Nuhma Gunyah speaks to the importance of creating safe places for Indigenous researchers to reveal their unique ways of communicating ideas and challenging the traditions of colonial research.
