Indigenous research methodologies and methods are critical for Indigenous scholars to centre and prioritise Indigenous perspectives, narratives, and knowledges, empower communities, and pursue justice and liberation (Asmar et al. Academic Research and Researchers 146–160, 2009; Locke et al. The Australian Educational Researcher 50(2):237–253, 2023). Whilst a diversity of Indigenous methodologies are known and utilised, within academic literature, there is a scarcity of Indigenous research methods present as a distinct approach to Indigenous data analysis (Drawson et al. International Indigenous Policy Journal 8(2), 2017; Yunkaporta and Moodie, Indigenous knowledges pp. 87–96, 2021). This chapter provides the theoretical groundwork of the novel Indigenous research method, termed MUSHROOMS. This method, gifted and generated through connection to Country, Kin, Community, and Spirit, utilises the rich diversity, symbolism, and metaphor of mycology (fungi, mycelium, and mushrooms) to underpin and guide the research process. MUSHROOMS embodies Indigenous, queer, gender-diverse, and disability perspectives, simultaneously rejecting normative ideologies of embodiment, function, and productivity (Gretch, 2012; Lugones Hypatia 22(1):186–219, 2007). As such, MUSHROOMS is a method applicable to complex research, particularly those that require an anti-colonial and justice-oriented approach. This chapter marks the primary articulation and appearance of MUSHROOMS method within the academic literature.
