A Predictive Model of User Experience in Driving Simulators: Examining the Impact of Individual Differences

Following Saudi Arabia’s 2017 decision to grant women driving rights, women’s driving schools incorporating driving simulators were established. However, these simulators face the challenge of catering to learners who are new to driving. This study addresses the gap in research on how individual differences influence user experience (UX) in driving simulators for novice female drivers in Saudi Arabia. The guiding research question is: How do individual differences affect the UX in semi-immersive driving simulators for novice Saudi female drivers? We utilized a unified questionnaire to assess 10 UX subscales relevant to semi-immersive environments, analyzing data from 161 Saudi women. A multivariate multiple regression identified three significant predictors out of 12: Comfort with Technology (β = 0.554, p = 0.001), Experience of Motion Sickness (β = −0.004, p = 0.019), and Driving Experience (β = −0.652, p = 0.005), all significant at the p < 0.05 level. Results indicate that comfort with technology enhances UX, while prior driving experience and motion sickness negatively affect adaptability and satisfaction in specific subscales. This study offers valuable insights for researchers and developers, highlighting the need to consider these factors when designing driving simulators to better support novice users.
