Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common condition that primary care and emergency medicine physicians frequently encounter in clinical practice. In this chapter, we review the typical, atypical, and alarm symptoms of GERD that guide treatment decisions. The approach to initial diagnostic testing and management of uncomplicated GERD is reviewed. In addition, when to refer for surgical consultation and what testing should accompany a referral are discussed.
