Feeding tube placement is commonly performed to facilitate stable and long-term enteral nutrition. For most indications, a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube is the preferred first choice of access and can be performed by appropriately trained gastroenterologists or surgeons. Radiographically or surgically placed feeding tubes may be required due to technical failure of PEG tube placement or situations where the anatomy or patient physiology is inappropriate for an endoscopic approach. This chapter reviews common indications for feeding tube placement and situations where referral to a surgeon is recommended for feeding tube placement.
