Toxic Monetization and Amplification in Digital Platform Design: The Case of Online Gendered Hate
摘要
Social media platforms can be a vibrant space for discussion but have also become a battleground for disseminating online hate. In particular, gendered online hate is disseminated by misogynistic actors who have gained large followings on online platforms. While social media companies face increasing pressure to combat online hate through deplatforming hateful actors and through content moderation, the persistence of hateful content can stem from the platforms’ very design. By exploring the relationship between platform design and user behaviour, I argue that social media platforms are structured to prioritize engagement with misogynistic and extreme worldviews, creating a cycle of toxicity, monetization, and amplification that perpetuates online gendered hate. Platform design can shape user interaction and harmful ideology by rewarding viral and toxic content; at the same time, a demand for toxic online culture and gendered online hate continues to feed the digital capitalist economy at the basis of platform design.
