Cape Canaveral, Florida, has been America’s launch complex for human spaceflight since the Mercury program in the early 1960s. With the advent of the Saturn Apollo program, the area underwent extensive expansion and new construction to support the Saturn I and Saturn V rockets. New facilities were built and existing ones modified to support the Space Shuttle program. With Project Constellation, NASA planned for but did not complete the changes to Kennedy Space Center when the program was canceled. The new Space Launch System did need new mobile launch platforms, refurbished Crawler Transporters, changes to the VAB and new infrastructure to support the SLS for decades to come.
