This chapter presents findings from a 2021 study of mid-level police leaders across various Norwegian police districts and specialized units. It provides insight into traditional perceptions of police leadership and explores themes such as recruitment practices, career pathways, and the influence of professional identity on leadership roles. The chapter highlights tensions between administrative and operational leadership and the persistence of beliefs that leadership is an innate trait. Differences in leadership expectations and practices between legal and police-trained leaders are also discussed, as well as a notable divide between top management and frontline officers. The role of culture, identity, and loyalty in shaping leadership understanding is central. Importantly, the chapter includes the views of the Police Union (Politiets Fellesforbund), which calls for stronger local leadership; greater focus on trust, dialogue, and values; and a clearer leadership philosophy rooted in practice and collaboration.

摘要
