In the global sphere, environmental challenges lay out both risks and opportunities that shape or reshape the business strategies. Because of the increase in the greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane, climate change still remains as one of the main and critical concern. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), human activities have already caused 1.10 °C global temperature rise since pre-industrial levels, with projections reaching 1.50 °C by 2040. Such changes result in extreme weather events which might disrupt the supply chain causing greater damage to the infrastructure and diminish workforce productivity. Another important issue is resource depletion. According to the Global Footprint Network, humans consume resources at 1.7 times the Earth’s regenerative capacity which poses a severe threat to ecosystems and economic stability. World Wildlife Fund remarks that loss in biodiversity such as habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation or climate change have caused a stark 69% decline in the population of global wildlife since 1970s. The loss majorly focuses on ecosystems that provide critical resources like food, water and raw materials. Pollution is one of the major causes of environmental and public health concern whereby industrial pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide degrade the ecosystems and are a major factor for air pollution as also pointed by the World Health Organization which leads to 7 million premature deaths annually. Therefore, to tackle such problems, businesses must adopt sustainable development practices into their core strategies. In order for companies to be innovative, profitable and resilient, companies must ensure to reduce climate risks, conserve resources, reduce pollution and preserve biodiversity.
