Types of Urologic Prostheses: Penile, Artificial Sphincter, Male Sling, and Testicular
摘要
Prosthetic devices to enhance body function and appearance have been used for centuries. In the male genital region, modern implants which were consistently effective and widely sold appeared over 50 years ago in the early 1970s. Penile implants restoring erections have seen many varieties over the last five decades and currently consist of two types, the hydraulic three-piece inflatable and the malleable semirigid rod. The AMS 800 artificial urinary sphincter has been the gold standard in managing stress urinary incontinence since its introduction. Male urethral slings have also been helpful in select patients in improving urinary continence. Men and boys who have missing testes have benefited from placement of testicular prostheses, which today are mostly saline-filled.
