Hybridity shapes Italian Gothic film Le orme [Footprints in the Moon] (Luiggi Bazzoni, 1975). Labelled a giallo on most websites and academic texts, the film denies classification: Bazzoni’s film blends together psychosexual drama, horror, science fiction and art-house style to tell the story of Alice Campos (Florinda Bolkan), who is haunted in her dreams by a vision of astronauts being left stranded on the moon. The motif of being stranded on the moon reconnects the Gothic with lunacy, meaning the mental affliction caused by the period following the full moon. The moon theme highlights the Gothic narrative of ephemeral borders and the dissolution of anything solid. In this chapter, I will make a close reading on how the lunacy sustaining Le orme answers Gothic social and cultural anxieties regarding mental stability in the face of discontinuous spatial experience produced by pervading modernity.

摘要
