Safeguarding Mexico: The Strategic Role of Lance-Sciesmex in the National Civil Protection and Resilience in the Space Sector

Space weather (SW) events, driven by solar activity, present significant risks to modern technological systems and critical infrastructure. In response to these challenges, Mexico has developed the National Space Weather Laboratory (LANCE) and the Mexican Space Weather Service (SCIESMEX) to monitor and mitigate the impacts of SW phenomena. These institutions, working in collaboration with the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), play a vital role in providing real-time monitoring and early warnings and fostering preparedness across sectors of telecommunications, navigation, energy, aviation, etc. This article discusses the foundation and tasks of LANCE and SCIESMEX, their contributions to the national civil protection framework, and efforts to strengthen Mexico’s resilience to SW events, the challenges they face, and the future opportunities that lie ahead for building a more resilient Mexico. The development of a network of observational instruments allowed us to collect regional data on SW parameter variations that had been unavailable in previous decades. This, in turn, opens new research areas, making SCIESMEX and LANCE key agents in monitoring and diagnostics of low latitude SW conditions. At the same time, the challenges securing adequate funding, expanding infrastructure, and increasing public awareness still remain. Through educational outreach, international collaborations, and the creation of tools such as the Space Weather Recommendations Guide, LANCE and SCIESMEX are leading the national effort to mitigate the impacts of SW.
