Comparative Performance Evaluation of WLAN 802.11ac vs. 802.11n for VoIP and HTTP Applications Using OPNET

Wireless LAN 802.11 has gained significant popularity due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of installation. However, a major disadvantage is its weak Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities, particularly for real-time applications such as video streaming and VoIP, which demand low latency and prioritized data handling. This study focuses on increasing Wireless LAN QoS features by comparing the performance of the current 802.11ac standard to the previous 802.11n standard. We constructed real-world scenarios using the Riverbed (OPNET) model to evaluate how better channel access techniques might alleviate QoS issues. According to our research, 802.11ac performs better than 802.11n because of improved channel allocation, especially when it comes to lowering latency and giving priority to critical traffic. These improvements make 802.11ac a significantly better option than previous iterations for handling the heavy demands of today.
