The healthcare sector has become a prime target for increasingly frequent and sophisticated cyber-attacks, leading to significant financial losses, compromised patient data, and disruptions to medical services. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape of healthcare data breaches, with up-to-date statistics through 2024 on the prevalence, financial impact, and scope of these incidents. We delve into the evolving strategies and attack vectors employed by cybercriminals, such as ransomware and phishing, which specifically target Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Protected Health Information (PHI). Furthermore, we explore the types of attackers involved—ranging from opportunistic criminals to highly organized groups—and assess the broad impact of these breaches on patients, healthcare organizations, and the industry at large. In addition to analyzing the damage caused by these breaches, we propose prospective forward-looking solutions, including the use of dark web monitoring to identify potential vulnerabilities and breaches before they result in larger-scale incidents, and we aim to build a taxonomy that leads to the mitigation of future risks.
