Currently, substantial quantities of water contaminated with toxic metals are being released into the environment as a result of industrial development. Various manufacturing sectors including mining, metal polishing, electroplating, textiles, ceramics, and battery production discharge heavy metals into the environment, posing significant hazards to all living organisms. Heavy metals interact with soil components through various mechanisms, including adsorption, immobilization, and surface precipitation. Consequently, it is essential to pursue the remediation of contaminated areas. Among the available technologies, adsorption is widely regarded as an effective method for removing heavy metal ions due to its high efficiency, rapid processing, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and the availability of a wide range of adsorbents. Using adsorbents reduces the bioavailability of contaminants and limits their dispersion throughout the environment. This chapter will focus on the need for inorganic pollutant removal and the role of biochar in this process. It discusses biochar preparation and its applications, specifically examining the efficacy of biochar in removing inorganic pollutants from soil. Furthermore, this chapter presents a comparative analysis of biochar with other substrates in terms of its effectiveness for soil remediation.
