Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous contaminants that pose serious dangers to human health and the environment. Therefore, reliable bioindicator species that may collect and reflect the presence of MPs in diverse ecosystems are necessary for the efficient monitoring of MPs pollution. There are numerous studies on the spread and buildup of MPs in the food chain. Smaller MPs make it easier for aquatic and terrestrial biota to absorb and subsequently accumulate along the food chain. This study examines possible terrestrial and aquatic bioindicator species that can be used to track microplastic pollution. Additionally, the important selection factors for bioindicators, including sensitivity to environmental pollutants, ecological significance, broad distribution, and simplicity of collecting were also discussed.

摘要
