The evolution of entrapment syndromes is histologically and symptomatically well known, but the speed of progression depends on personal factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, hypothyroidism, and diabetes. The severity of the injury depends on the intensity of the compression and on its duration. Histopathologically, the first symptom is an increase in intraneural pressure, leading to an endoneurial edema, which in turn causes an increase in intraneural pressure. After a while, these disturbances lead to a thickening of the connective tissue, which may result in a loss of nerve gliding. Without an effective treatment, the progression is towards a localized then diffuse demyelination of the nerve fibers, culminating in axonal degeneration. The use of provocative maneuvers is essential to highlight a nerve damage before it becomes too extensive.
