Conversations and discussions with the public about vaccination are arguably the most important aspect of vaccine service provision. As has been discussed, effective vaccination programmes rely on a sustained high vaccine uptake across the population. Despite the evidence for the impact of vaccines being clear, it has always been the case that not everyone who is eligible to receive them will do so. Understanding the complex reasons why some people are not vaccinated is essential—these include having questions and concerns resulting in “vaccine hesitancy”. This chapter focuses on one approach to addressing vaccine hesitancy through discussions with parents and patients. The principles of effective communication about vaccination are presented and the many resources available to support these conversations highlighted here and in Appendix 1. Communication is a fundamental part of nursing care. Providing evidence-based information in a sensitive, compassionate and understandable manner encompasses the art and science of nursing. Our discussions with people to support them in their vaccination decisions are crucial.
