It is therefore imperative to have clear governance in place to ensure vaccinators not only have the necessary skills but also have support available to be accountable for their practice. Ensuring public and professional trust and confidence in vaccine programmes is crucial to their overall success. The skills and knowledge needed by a competent vaccination workforce are therefore broader than those concerned only with vaccine administration. Skills and knowledge of the wider processes for safe and effective vaccine delivery are required, for example, issues relating to vaccine storage. In addition, a skilled workforce needs to be equipped to have effective and supportive vaccine conversations with patients and parents and to direct people to reputable information and resources.
