The Future of STEM Education in a Developing Country: Re-Aligning Approaches for Successful Implementation

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), characterised by disruptive technologies, is a chief international driver of change that has implications for STEM education. Expectations of stakeholders regarding STEM output, emerging needs and constant changes are also drivers for effective STEM education. Globally, governments and industries have prioritised improving the quality of STEM learning to meet industrial and workforce needs in the near future. Zimbabwe is one of the developing countries that has made an effort to improve STEM learning because it is vital to develop the skills required to meet future demands. In light of this, in Zimbabwe, efforts have been made to enrol more students in STEM subjects so they can have various STEM professions in the future. Such futuristic predictions have implications for the STEM approaches, which must be aligned with STEM and twenty-first-century skills in the 4IR era. In developing countries, the trajectory of STEM education is critical for sustainable development and global competitiveness. This chapter explores the opportunities for reshaping STEM education strategies to align with developing nations’ unique needs and contexts. It examines the impact of globalisation, technological advancements, and socio-economic factors on educational policies and practices. By synthesising existing literature, the chapter highlights innovative approaches and best practices for enhancing STEM education in developing contexts. Key considerations include policy reforms, fostering inclusive and equitable access to STEM education, investment in infrastructure and resources, and integrating emerging technologies and professional development. Through strategic alignment and collaboration among stakeholders, this chapter proposes actionable recommendations to advance the future of STEM education in developing countries, ultimately contributing to socio-economic growth, scientific advancement, and global sustainability.
