This chapter provides comprehensive information as to how and where the cells of blood are produced i.e. the Bone Marrow This rather complex and diffuse organ gives rise to the several lineages of blood cells. Each of these lineages originates from the surface of the bone where the Stem Cells* reside. These progenitor cells are induced to give rise to the cells of blood through protein messengers called growth factors (or cytokines) that provide instructions to the stem cells and their progeny on how to differentiate and mature. The clinical use of growth factors is also discussed in this chapter.

摘要

This chapter provides comprehensive information as to how and where the cells of blood are produced i.e. the Bone Marrow This rather complex and diffuse organ gives rise to the several lineages of blood cells. Each of these lineages originates from the surface of the bone where the Stem Cells* reside. These progenitor cells are induced to give rise to the cells of blood through protein messengers called growth factors (or cytokines) that provide instructions to the stem cells and their progeny on how to differentiate and mature. The clinical use of growth factors is also discussed in this chapter.
