In this chapter, we discuss the discoveries of Paul Ehlrich, Emil von Behring and Shibasaburo Kitasato, who described ‘antitoxins’, later called antibodies. Their structure was elucidated by Michael Heidelberger and Linus Pauling, who provided insights as to how antibodies interact with antigens. Rodney Porter and Gerry Edelman identified the parts of antibodies that were specific for a particular antigen and the parts that had biological function. The discovery of these proteins, together with various cells, i.e. lymphocytes, macrophages, and the chemical messengers (cytokines), provided, in essence, the basis for a new science, Immunology.
