In this chapter, we describe one of the most frequent issues affecting our health: anemia. In most cases, anemia is due to the loss of blood, and less frequently, it is caused by a reduced production of blood elements. One of these is iron, which is essential for the function of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency is the most frequent cause of anemia, and its metabolism is described in this chapter. Also, other ‘micronutrients*’ are relevant for the production of blood, and their activity is explained.
