Human capital, including the skills, knowledge, and health of individuals, is the foundation of a nation’s socio-economic growth. Using the three foundational pillars of human capital: education, healthcare, and skill development, this chapter examines India’s journey in human capital development during a critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and provides an overview of pre-pandemic challenges that exist for human development. We offer a conceptual framework by analyzing India’s journey and its innovative approach to keeping pace with developing human capital. Thus, this chapter also presents a practical approach to emerging nations to strategically address the challenges in human capital development during critical junctures.
