Smart Working in Italy: A Continuing Trend
摘要
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of working from home (or teleworking or remote working), whose adoption was drastically accelerated by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Research had already been conducted to investigate this work mode before the pandemic and uncover its main characteristics and implications. However, its rapid acceleration in such a peculiar emergency context requires further investigation. We also summarise how working from home was embraced in Europe and, in particular, in Italy, the country that was mostly affected by the pandemic in the first months of its outbreak, where it is referred to as “smart working”. Data from various national and international reports unveil that its spread is sensitive to sector and company dimension at both European and Italian levels. However, its adoption is now driving a structural change in human resource management, going beyond the temporary response to crisis.
