This chapter explores how New England culture and political dynamics affect the region’s two “purple battlegrounds” in presidential elections: Maine and New Hampshire. It is undeniable that globalization, angry partisanship, and digital connectivity are driving electoral trends in every U.S. region. Yet local place and regional culture still matter. “Place” includes not only the physical environment and demographics, but also local traditions and perceptions shaping subjective “sense of place.” Recent presidential elections in Maine and New Hampshire are influenced by changing New England regional economic trends, migration, and urbanization, but it is all framed and given meaning by more stable patterns of longstanding laws, political traditions, religion, and New England culture.
