Introduction
摘要
.This introductory chapter locates the female novel of decolonisation within its broader historical and literary context. Starting with a brief outline of the main historical events, the chapter next reviews the relevant literary scholarship on the end-of-empire novel. The chapter then proceeds to explain the concept, characteristics and reception of the middlebrow, both in relation to the mainstream domestic novel, and its more overtly political variants, the interwar and the Cold War middlebrow.
