Stags School for Boys: Elite Masculinities, Nudes as Homosocial Currency and Mastering Your Digital Footprint
摘要
In this chapter we visit Stags School for Boys, a highly ranked, selective independent ‘all boys’ school for 4–18 year olds located on a rural campus. We consider how elite ‘single sex’ boys’ school environments create contexts of male entitlement and privilege. The boys digitally sexually interact with students at a nearby selective girls’ school but were very careful about keeping a clean digital footprint and never having digital evidence of nudes on their phones. The boys were committing image-based sexual abuse by sharing images on their phones, but are not aware of image based abuse, since their e-safety focused on risks to boys of possession of child pornography and going on the sex offender list. The boys frankly discuss their use of porn and awareness that it’s not ‘real’, but also complained about being targeted with porn content on social media apps, from ‘porn bots’ aimed at getting them to click onto or sign up for paid-for sex subscriptions. Through the discussion the boys critically reflect about what might need to change to reduce competitive masculinity pressures amongst boys and they say they want their sex education to improve to cover porn and digital relationships.
