Scientific Rhizome of CULagos an Approach from Complex Networks

This study analyzes the structure of the collaboration network of scientific publications in journals indexed in the JCR, authored by researchers from the Centro Universitario de los Lagos (CULagos) since its foundation. As commonly reported in the literature, two researchers are considered linked if they share a co-authorship of a scientific article. Scopus’ public database was used to cover 2005 to 2023. An algorithm was designed to identify each researcher by assigning a unique identifier (ID). This step was crucial to prevent a single researcher from appearing as a duplicate in the collaboration network, which could skew the centrality metrics. A disambiguation process was implemented to achieve this unification, analyzing each name variant to determine their similarity using an assisted identification method. Based on topological measuresTopological measure such as the network’s average degree, density, diameter, and eigenvector centrality, we found that this network exhibits characteristics of a small-world network, where clearly defined communities linked to different fields of study can be observed, as well as interactions between these areas. These communities facilitate interactions among specialized researchers, reducing the distance between them through a few intermediaries, thus promoting the emergence of frontier science proposals.
