This essay focuses on Dana Vespoli’s representation of spanking in porn, and especially on the mise-en-scène of the MILF’s pleasure and consent through a comparison of three among her films: her participation in Lesbian Adventures: Strap-on Specialists Vol. 10 (2016), which stages a combination of gonzo sexual acts and alt porn aesthetics; her Evil Angel film Consent (2019), in which the act of spanking is used as a mechanism for establishing power roles; and Mother Lovers Society (2012), in which the focus appears to be on a deviant mother figure. In what follows, I suggest that Vespoli’s work is centred on normalising female sexuality and desires, and in challenging social archetypes, such as that of the mother. As her use of gonzo porn repertoires reveals, Vespoli’s work addresses themes of desire, agency, power, beauty, and pleasure within the confines of gender hierarchy and heteronormativity. Her works explore and challenge the traditional idea of female passivity as well as the seemingly mainstream and feminist ideal of female sexuality as necessarily linked to intimate relationships and affection.
