‘There’s a Monster Inside All of Us’: Empathy, Trauma, and the Duality of Jinx in Arcane
摘要
This chapter theorises the potential of Netflix’s animated series and video game adaptation Arcane (2021–present) to provoke empathy by sympathetically exploring the complexities of characters’ unresolved trauma. In their detailed analysis of the character Jinx, they draw on interdisciplinary readings on the concept of spectatorial engagement, perceptual realism, and cognitive anthropology in computer-generated worlds. This chapter contends that by combining appropriate computer-generated aesthetics and a trauma-driven transgressive narrative, the series elicits a strong emotional response in viewers.
